Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. Indicators of autism usually appear by age 2 or 3. Some associated development delays can appear even earlier, and often it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months. There is not one autism but many sub-types, most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges.
Children with autism face many challenges and they can be left out or bullied. They can have difficulty fitting in or making friends. Service Dogs seem to help with that. Children with autism have shown enormous improvement with social skills and communication when placed with a Autism Support Dog. These dogs are also trained to track the child if he/she wanders off. Autism Support Dogs have helped a lot of families with autistic children. Children show improvement with their support dog and become more interactive with people.
Dogs are not judgmental, and they accept us for who we are. They are loyal companions that offer us unconditional love. Above the numerous ways an Autism Support Dog can help, this may be the most beneficial of all.
